2019 TCOEM Annual Scientific Meeting

Join old friends and make new ones at TCOEM’s annual conference! This year we will be meeting on Saturday October 26th, 2019, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in beautiful Nashville.

Our theme is Workplace Wellness. Speakers will cover diverse topics such as: updates from Tennessee’s Workers’ Compensation Bureau, physician wellness, and worksite wellness interventions.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Lilian Cheung, Director of Health Promotion and Communication, Department of Nutrition at Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health, will share her knowledge about nutrition worksite interventions and mindfulness. Early Registration closes Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 11:59 PM CST. Dr. Snyder was appointed Medical Director for the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation in January, 2014 after 37 years of Orthopaedic private practice.A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, he completed two years of general surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh before coming to Nashville to complete a residency in Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University.Special activities have included Associate Team Physician for Vanderbilt and Tennessee State University Athletics, Volunteer Orthopaedic Consultant at Fort Campbell during Desert Storm, Orthopaedics Overseas (an affiliate of Health Volunteers Overseas) in Peru, church related mission activities in Honduras, and the 1996 Hospital Strategic Planning Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic. He served as President of the Medical Staff at St. Thomas Hospital from 1997 through 1999, and on the Medical Care Cost Containment Committee for Workers’ Compensation from its inception in 1992 until 2014.Dr. Snyder has presented lectures for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Society of Peru, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the National Workers Compensation and Disability Conference, the National Association of Workers Compensation Judges, and in Tennessee: the Tennessee Chiropractic Association, the Tennessee Orthopaedic Society, the Tennessee College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Tennessee Pain Society, the Tennessee Neurosurgical Society, the Tennessee Medical Society, and Tennessee Attorney Memo. He has made numerous other presentations to attorneys, case managers, employers, adjusters and insurers. He is the course director for the Bureau’s physician education conference.His activities with the Bureau include Medical Treatment Guidelines, the Drug Formulary, Utilization Review, Case Management, Fee Schedules and physician/provider communications.

Dr. Talmage is a graduate of the Ohio State University for both undergraduate school and medical school (1972). His orthopedic surgery training was in the United States Army.He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and was board certified in Emergency Medicine 1987-2017.He retired from clinical practice in April 2016 after 36 years as a treating physician in Cookeville.He is a frequent contributor to multiple American Medical Association publications.He does peer review of article submissions for 3orthopaedic journals.In 2013 he was Acting Medical Director for the State of Tennessee Division of Worker’s Compensation.In 2014 he became the Assistant Medical Director for the Division.He has taught in Physician CME courses for IAIME, AAOS, ACOEM, SEAK, and the TN BWC. Since 1992 he has given 931 lectures to physician audiences

LILIAN CHEUNG, D.Sc., R.D. is Lecturer and Director of Health Promotion & Communication at the Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Nutrition. She is the Editorial Director of The Nutrition Source ( www.thenutritionsource.org ), the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s nutrition website with a broad global reach for health professionals, media and consumers. She is also co-editorial directors of Asian Diabetes Prevention Initiative ( www.asiandiabetesprevention.org ) and Obesity Prevention Source ( www.obesitypreventionsource.org ). Her work focuses on the translation of science-based recommendations into public health communications and programs. She has extensive experience working with mass media vehicles to promote healthy lifestyles for chronic disease prevention and control. She was the co-Principal Investigator and co-author of Eat Well & Keep Moving (2001,; 3 rd edition 2016), a widely disseminated school-based nutrition and physical activity program for upper elementary school children., that has been adopted in all 50 states.She initiated and co-edited Child Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity (1995) with the late Surgeon General Dr. Julius Richmond, and co-authored Be Healthy! It’s A Girl Thing: Food, Fitness and Feeling Great! (2003, 2nd edition 2010) with popular children book author Mavis Jukes, a book written for adolescent girls. Her insight into healthy living and mindfulness practice led to Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life, co-authored with Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh (2010) that has been acquired for translation in 17 countries.Together with the late former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Julius Richmond, she co-hosted one of the earliest national conferences to address childhood obesity, and co-edited Child Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity(Human Kinetics,1995). She also teamed up with a well-known children’s writer, Mavis Jukes, to create a book for adolescent girls, Be Healthy! It’s A Girl Thing: Food, Fitness and Feeling Great! (Crown/Random House, 2003).Dr. Cheung has been a student of Thich Nhat Hanh for more than a decade. She leads meditation groups and has helped establish ongoing mindfulness meditation sessions offered to all students, faculty and staff at the Harvard School of Public Health.
